Steven Arthur Vanderbilt
Avon – Unexpectedly on March 24, 2020 and on the 11th anniversary of his beloved wife’s passing, at age 74. He is survived by his sons Kevin (Joann Delano), Kirk (Karen) Vanderbilt; granddaughters Ella, Maggie Vanderbilt; sisters, Judith Curtis, Margery (David) Cliff, Bonnie (Ray) Miller, Ellen (Daniel) West; brother, Russell (Dona) Vanderbilt; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: several nieces and nephews; his special secondary family, Rob, Autumn, Marcia, Kelly, Mike, Nicole, Gabby, Sheena, Danielle, Jody, and Kim. He is predeceased by his brother Howard and his beloved wife Barbara.
Born in Rochester and raised in the Kendall NY area, Steve attended and graduated from Kendall Central School, where he met a his high-school sweetheart, Barb. After his 2 years at SUNY Morrisville, he married that sweetheart in July of 1966. After his post-graduate work in Vietnam, he found work in Avon at Birds Eye. A loyal company man, he took assignments in Arkansas and Michigan, eventually making his way back to Avon where he and Barb set down roots and raised their boys. After 42 years and a few mergers he retired from Kraft in 2008.
Steve was known as a man of service to his family and community. A devoted husband and father, a Vietnam War Veteran, past member of the Van Zandt Hose Company, past member of the Avon Rotary-Lions Ambulance Service, Troop 26 Scout leader and Committee Member, 30+ years member of Avon Lions Club, 9 year member of the Avon Rotary Club, 42 years as a devoted and accomplished Freemason, Session and Choir member and long-term treasurer for the Central Presbyterian Church, and most recently serving as the long-term treasurer to the Avon Interfaith Council and the Avon Food Pantry, a cause for which he had much passion. He is both a Robert J. Uplinger Award winner and a Paul Harris Fellow. He rarely said “no” and leaves a proud legacy to his family and friends.
His Funeral Service will be held Saturday, November 27, 2021 at 11 AM at the Central Presbyterian Church, 133 Genesee Street, Avon. Interment at Avon Cemetery with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Avon Free Library, 143 Genesee St Avon, NY 14414, or the Avon Interfaith Council - Food Pantry 1761 Athena Drive Avon, NY 14414.
