Obituary for Joan E. Gibson

Joan Elizabeth (Morsch) Gibson

Avon: Joan Gibson peacefully passed away on March 3, 2015 at age 83, after a brief battle with lung cancer. Joan was predeceased by her parents Edward J. Morsch and Gertrude (Monahan) Morsch, and her sister Alice Shull.

Joan is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Arthur (Art) A. Gibson. They have four children, nine grandchildren, and one great-grandson: son, Mike Gibson (Matsue) and their two children Kent and Kate of California and Japan; son, John Gibson of New York State; daughter, Margaret Williamson (Paul) and children Samantha Haley, Ken Haley, Kersten Haley and great grandson Elijah White, all of Florida, and Andrew Haley of Virginia; daughter, Judy Figgins (Steve) and children Matthew, Curtis, and Connor of California. Joan is also survived by in-laws: Richard Shull, Greta May, Norma and Robert Evans, Norma and Harold Gibson, Robin and Howard Gibson, and Lois and Richard Pappa; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Joan was born January 14, 1932 in Wayland, NY, but was raised in Dansville, NY where she attended St. Mary's Parochial School and Dansville Central High School, graduating with the class of 1949. Post H.S., Joan was employed by Western Union and The NYS Workman's Compensation Board. Later, she worked in Purchasing at Roswell Hospital, Buffalo. Joan and Art were wed in Danville's St. Mary's Catholic Church on May 1, 1954. With the birth of her first child, Joan dedicated herself to raising her family. Later, she was employed as a supervisor in Cashier's/Registration and as a secretary in Shipping and Receiving at California State University, Fullerton; taking retirement in 1991. Throughout the years, Joan did volunteer work with Welcome Wagon, a soup kitchen, Meals on Wheels, and as a hospital volunteer.

Traveling by motorhome, Joan and Art enjoyed crossing the United States many times; venturing east and west, north and south, visiting loved ones, friends, and seeing the sights. Tuffy, their cat, joined the travels. Joan and Art also visited Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Puerto Rico, and made a special trip to Japan to visit their eldest son, Mike and family.

Joan and Art lived in numerous places: Cheektowaga, NY; Westfield, NY; Maumee, OH; New Orleans, LA; Placentia, CA; Spartanburg, SC; Lake Wales, FL; and most recently Avon, NY. Many friends, across the country, are sorrowed by Joan's passing.

The family thanks you for your condolences and prayers. A memorial/celebration gathering of family and friends will be planned for late spring.

In lieu of flowers, Joan would have liked donations sent to The American Diabetes Association, 160 Allens Creek Rd. Building 160, Rochester, NY 14618; or Noyes Dialysis Center, 4616 Millennium Dr., Geneseo, NY 14454.
